After leaving out two of the most significant breakthrough singles of last year (‘Salt Air’, ‘Solo’) it was a risqué manoeuvre by Tigs & co to exclude them from their debut disc. And although ditching their springboards, ‘Unicorn’ still has a heady armoury of delectable synth assassins to capture your heart. A melee of love torn exasperations riddle their lyrical content, their soaring synth stabs are underpinned by a multitude of layers and as one of the foremost electo-pushers of 2009 London trio Chew Lips don’t dissatisfy with this collection of ditty electro-pop. Tigs is refulgent in her vocals as ever and the lyrics boast that obscure zeal to them- “It’s like a high-speed chase on your wedding day”. But the inherent retro aesthetics that Chew Lips smatter upon their music is a fine polish and one in which you’ll find hard not to plummet head first into their awaiting arms. It’s only a matter of time before you become a Chew Lips fan, that’s if you’re not already…
