So where do And So I Watch You From Afar go after 2013’s All Hail Bright Futures, which saw them expanding their territory while combining fast-paced fretwork with big rock- out riffs? The album’s opener, ‘Run Home’ kicks in with a noodlesome groove and a big choral sound that yields to soaring post-rock on a cosmic scale. Its tidal wave crescendo paves the way for the punk-meets-post-rock pop tune ‘These Things I Know’, and the answer it seems, is by continuing with business as usual. And why not? Yet at the same time, they’ve continued to expand their sonic horizons, the fractal guitars of ‘Fucking Lifer’ colliding against a chunky rhythm section and seven-minute title track standing as a megalithic work. Across the 10 tracks on ‘Heirs’ there are infinite twists and turns, and the listener certainly isn’t afforded any opportunity to sit back and ride a steady flow of hooky choruses. Heirs is an album that’s all about action. Where ASIWYFA excel is is leaping between sections most unexpectedly, with instantaneous changes in tempo and dynamic without it ever sounding contrived or forced. They also excel at being a rock band. And Heirs does definitely rock.
