The first thing that strikes you about Bath quartet Daedalus' Right Eye's debut release is the sheer amount of effort in the package. The album artwork is reminiscent of Mastodon's most recent album, and inside the lyrics to each track is sprawled across the width of the case, a narrative told in minute detail. Second is the unusual move of opening with a softer, atmospheric number before launching into their 15 minute mini concept album which has more than a few hints of Coheed & Cambria hidden inside. A little more pop-orientated than their influences, their story-telling capabilities are no weaker – tales of robotic love and sinister characters conclude with 'Mr McKeif,' a emotive track competing for stand-out status with the hook-laden 'Dream Catcher.' The band have been gigging since 2009, and that togetherness shines through on an EP in which every instrument is in perfect synch with its companions, and where the vocal interplay would put several more established bands to shame. With excellent musicianship and a imagination not afraid to delve into the fantastical, Daedalus' Right Eye have all the ingredients to thrill an audience in search of more intelligent pop-prog.
