'In The Garden,' the opening track from Glaswegian outfit Die Hard's eponymous debut album, should in all theory lead straight into a wall of indie rock or a kaleidoscope of textures, its manipulated vocals and elongated synth notes not quite enough to lead the listener definitively down one either path. In the end, the result is a little blurry, reminiscent of Animal Collective suggesting a more experimental edge, even if Die Hard's reluctance to completely discard their more accessible roots somewhat limits their scope. At times, their self-titled album sparkles with breezy brilliance, but the flashes are too sporadic. All the ingredients are there for 'Die Hard' to become a soundtrack to early summer; airy vocals, catchy instrumental lines, electric wobbles on the intriguingly-titled 'Mmmm' – but there is also a downbeat tempo which places the album in a strange limbo which is hard to escape from. If they solve their identity crisis, Die Hard has the potential to create something beautiful. However, their debut isn't quite there yet.
