Josh Tillman is fast establishing himself as one of the most unique voices in modern music. And at times it’s hard to tell if ‘I Love You, Honeybear’ is the most genuine love letter ever recorded, or the boldest backhanded compliment. Tillman lays his marriage bare, with a frankness as striking as it is amusing. Tracks like ‘The Night Josh Tillman Came To Our Apt.’ seem too idiosyncratic to have been made up, but too bizarrely detailed to be real. That dichotomy seems to run through the former Fleet Foxes drummer entirely. It would be satire if it wasn’t so personal. It would be confessional if it wasn’t so celebratory. And it’s love-at-first-sight charming. The unassuming American jingle that rattles through much of this record makes the perfect canvas for Tillman’s warts-and-all stories of love, stories in which he neither disguises nor excuses any of his, or anyone else’s, transgressions. Part of what’s so refreshingly brilliant about I Love You, Honeybear is that for all its wit and sarcasm and near-confrontational honesty, it seems like a totally frank description of Tillman’s relationship. It’s a view of his marriage that pulls no punches and expects none pulled. And isn’t that essentially the epitome of modern marriage? The ability to be completely, devastatingly honest about the relationship.
