The world of ambient electronica is a difficult one to break into – a handful of canonical artists imitated by a plethora of pretenders, with very few of them managing to mould their inspirations into a coherent sound of their own. Somehow, Jesse Ruins appear to have done just that. Yes, debut EP 'Dream Analysis' does owe a lot to the soundscapes of M83 and the upbeat rhythms of Air France, but the beauty is in the blend; soaring background synthesizers combined with disembodied vocals to create a haunting yet uplifting musical experience. At just 21 minutes, 'Dream Analysis' is but a fleeting glimpse of things to come, but what a glimpse it is – 'Sofija' starts slowly then bursts into a waterfall of shimmering euphoria, whilst the title track is a little darker, buzzing below the surface with the ghostly vocals layered on thick. If this mysterious Tokyo double-act are able to transfer this standard over to the full-length format, they will surely enter into the electronic canon with very little opposition.
