Cornwall’s Lost Dawn shot to prominence in 2015 with their bright, glam-infused self-titled debut, drawing favorable reviews and lots of comparisons to T-Rex. Fever, though, sees this 3-piece leave behind the clean edges of T-Rex in favour of lowdown dirty fuzzbox rock n roll. On the more experimental end of things is the excellent title track. A melancholic lead breaks into powerful riffs, then 'Fever' somehow swings from Can to Os Mutantes in a real showcase tune. 'Naked Lunch' and 'Electrify' are more straightforward indie rock numbers, both of a high standard, energetic toe-tappers with a sound that falls somewhere between Foxygen and The Dandy Warhols. 'Construction Rock' has a solid, Dr Feelgood pub-rock feel to it, with likable, tongue-in-cheek lyrics such as: “I’m making a livin’ from making somewhere to live in”. And of course, no mini-album would be complete without a 9 ½ minute psychedelic shoegazer – 'Aguila', which is actually sets a rather superb, laid-back elongated groove that really draws you in. Fever may be a little loose around the edges in places, but this is an advantage as the overall effect is an authentic and original-sounding release. One for the purists.
