Let’s be honest: bands led by drummers are rarely spectacular. But since departing Placebo in 2007, Steve Hewitt’s been demonstrating a real skill for songwriting and vocals, and generally exceeding expectations. Lose Your Way follows the band’s eponymous debut after a lengthy five-year wait, but listening to these 10 tracks, it’s evident that time’s been spent crating and honing the material. The stonking bass-led rush that is the title track gets things off to a cracking start with its post punk surge whilst ‘Modern War Song’ explodes from tidy shoegaze pop to a blistering mid-song crescendo, and ‘Swan Killer’ is urgent and energetic, with the guitars pitched to the fore. There are Cure-esque tracks in abundance: ‘Watch Myself’ captures that densely layered, dreamy-yet-bleak ‘Disintegration’ vibe, and the dreamy sonic wash of ‘Paper Tiger’ is deeply evocative If the shadow of Placebo hangs over ‘Menace Ballad’, then the last three tracks, all over six minutes in length, show a band exploring multiple different directions, even reinterpreting ‘Lose Your Way’ so radically as to render it another song entirely. Dark, brooding, but also dynamic and exhilarating, Lose Your Way has focus, and a lot going for it.
