“Atmospheric” is no synonym of “dull”. If there’s one thing ‘Dispossession’ cannot be described as, it’s background music. Curiosity is kindled by the first song ‘Pariah’, where musical layers are slowly introduced and the ground is laid for a LP that travels to a whole host of more or less dramatic places. Mike Wexler somewhat alters one’s traditional idea of “singer-songwriter”. His production operates on different levels; comforting and slightly folk-like psychedelia alternates with disturbing, dissonant instrumental passages. The amount of ambiances encountered both throughout the LP and within the songs themselves make ‘Dispossession’ subtly traverse quite a few music genres. A soft, breathy, almost spoken voice somehow blends smoothly with the rest of the timbres; any seams created are entirely intentional and interpreted with hors-norm quantities of class. Mike Wexler uses an interesting set of instruments to bring his pattern to life including piano, synthesizer, multiple string instruments and drums that are played with noticeable intricacy. An extremely present and haunting bass line has a crucial part in making Wexler’s world what it is, and it is a world that never loses in quality.
