In order to listen to his album, you have to know what you're getting yourself involved in. 'Looming' is not a record that you can dip into and out of at will, and it's not particularly accessible in the well-known sense of the word. What it is, is an album that's more 'experienced' than listened to. Take opener 'How It Happens', which deals in stabbing guitars and thudding drums, moving through an abrasive opening two-and-a-half minutes before settling into something resembling a verse-chorus structure, which lingers briefly and is then gone as the song settles into an instrumental freakout. This full-on approach is the blueprint for the album, and if you feel overwhelmed listening to songs like the oddly danceable 'Floating Omen' or the flippantly-titled 'A Single Fuck' (which, you can imagine, the band do not give), then they're doing their job. 'Looming' chews you up and spits you out without any regard for your wellbeing, and its bone-crushing noise-rock cares not for your delicate ears. It's very much a divisive album, but it should nonetheless be stuck with, as these songs, cacophonous though they may be, are often delightful.
