Without the film, a score is a difficult thing to take in. It is a painter without a landscape, a script without the actors. Such is the nature of Ólafur Arnalds' latest project, the Icelandic multi-instrumentalist's soundtrack to the tale of dysfunction and personal devastation in Sam Levinson's directorial debut 'Another Happy Day.' Removing the cinematography aside, there is little doubting the beauty inherent to Arnalds' work. On previous albums he has battled against genre stereotyping, leaping from the classical to electronic via way of Sigúr Ros, but this falls clearly into the former – a minimalist mixture of softly caressed piano and lingering violin which brings a beautiful yet heartbreaking feel to the album. Of course to highlight particular tracks out of context would be irresponsible, but in the latter half of the score a resemblance to the likes of Ludovico Einaudi and Roberto Cacciapaglia is audible, Arnalds taking inspiration from the Italian minimalists to create a work which is excellent in its own right, a sombre listening experience but one which is wholly enjoyable.
