This latest solo release by Pavement’s Scott Kannberg (AKA Spiral Stairs) is an accomplished, varied and enjoyable album. Quirky and innovative sure, while always underpinned by solid rock and rolls grooves. The single Dance (Cry Wolf) is a funky, disco-tinged opener to the album, featuring some great, tongue-out-the-side-of-the-mouth guitar work. Emoshuns is an interesting cut, and perhaps the closest sounding to a Stephen Malkmus solo number. But otherwise, Kannberg’s sound is pretty distinct. Dundee Man takes you on a musical tour of Scottish cities, haggis and all. Alongside the excellent AWM, you can really hear Spiral Stairs’ balanced style and effortless ability to spin a melody. Catchy slices of country rock with some tight guitar licks, nice strings and the odd retro electronica thrown in. Exemplified by the excellent slow-burner Angel Eyes. The standout number is No Comparison. A killer bass line leads into a funky blend of ethereal, floating vocals and dirty synth breaks – it’s an understated masterpiece. The title track Doris and The Daggers is also kind of a fun blast. Overall, Doris & The Daggers proves to be a thoroughly enjoyable release from beginning to end.
