Upon finding out that The Beat were releasing their first album in 30 years we were raring to give it a listen. Featuring Ranking Roger, the second wave ska legends have brought their iconic sound to the modern age and have once again made it well and truly accessible to the mainstream. Opening track 'Walking On The Wrong Side' doesn't fail to disappoint, showcasing a sway-inducing beat, a trademark sax hook and catchy chorus leading to 'Busy Busy Doing Nothing'; a promising ska pop track, though at times it feels as if it's missing the soul that can be felt in The Beat's earlier work. Similarly, 'Work Work Work' is a pleasant listen, but it doesn't seem to fully gel with other tracks on the album which echo a more authentic ska sound. In contrast, 'Side To Side' is a lively off-beat number that won't fail to get you moving, while 'My Dream' is a nostalgic hit taking you straight back to the dance halls of the 80's. It is clear that The Beat have not lost the ability to create ska music that can be enjoyed by the masses, though will it inspire a new wave of ska fanatics? Watch this space.
