Scandinavian cool has long been in vogue. From the great sagas and sweaters, to the box-set series and striking designs, the region has thrived in captivating the world with its charm. Yet, arguably their biggest and most creative output, lie in their music industry, churning out countless bands and acclaimed records. The diversity in Scandinavia’s burgeoning labels, often set up in remote locations, are staggering both in breadth and style. PIAS has done the unenviable thing, and selected 34 choice cuts from the best Scandinavian music of recent years, to varying results. Countless familiar acts appear, from household Norwegian dance-poppers Röyksopp, to the wonderfully bonkers Swedish mask-donners The Knife, and the harmonic bliss of First Aid Kit. There’s the urgent beats of Finnish DJ and house producer, Jori Hulkkonnen’s ‘Flash Boy’, a Temper Trap remix of popular indie stalwarts Peter, Bjorn and John, as well as the dark electronica of Man Without Country’s ‘All Is Full of Love’. Not everything works, and the compilation fails to reveal any new surprises, yet overall is less pick and mix and generally a coherent listen at Scandinavian’s finest talents.
