We don't know what it's like be covered in blue paint, but Andy Wright clearly isn't a fan. Something he should be a lot happier with is his long-awaited debut album as We Show Up On Radar. He departed Swimming earlier this year to fully concentrate on his solo project, and this renewed focus is evident throughout the 11-song collection. His folk-pop can verge on sounding overly twee at times, but listeners who don't approve of that needn't worry, as this is balanced out nicely by the often pessimistic lyrics: 'You called an airstrike on my heart; it didn't make a sound' from 'It Should Be You And Me' is one such noteworthy example. His hook-laden approach to songwriting shines through most brightly on songs like 'Where Is My Love (In The Arms Of Billy Crystal)' and in a markedly different way on the reflective closer 'Hands Up If You're Lost', whose powerful finale is wonderfully accomplished, seeming to come from absolutely nowhere. Wright could very well do the same with this album, as it's packed to the brim with potential. He'll be showing up on other people's radars quite soon, if his confident debut is anything to go by.
