The illustrious Reading Festival returns this week with a plethora of acts ranging from the biggest names in music to the new and upcoming ones. The event will be headlined by returning act Metallica, before Mumford & Sons make their Reading headline debut alongside the recently reformed Libertines. There may be three headliners but they are flanked by hundreds more, here we have five bands that you must catch at the festival…

The Gaslight Anthem

New Jersey’s finest have played the festival before, but this could potentially be their last. Having announced an extended break after their current European tour, their show at Reading will be their last for some time, making it the perfect time to catch this punk rock outfit.

When? 14.50 - Sunday Where? Main stage

Must listen to track: ’59 Sound

Wolf Alice

It’s been a long journey for the London four piece, who started off as an acoustic two piece. Bolstered to a four piece, they toured the country tirelessly before the release of debut album ‘My Love Is Cool’ earlier this year. It’s been a packed festival season already, and they’ll look to Reading and Leeds as a way to close the summer in style. As previous attendees of the festival, they look set to make the step up to the NME Stage with a bang.

When? 17.20 - Saturday Where? Radio 1/NME Stage

Must listen to track: You’re A Germ

The Smith Street Band / The Menzingers

I’m cheating a little here by including two bands, but the pair are playing consecutively (depending on a replacement for Modern Baseball) on the Lock Up stage. They are both at the forefront of the very healthy punk rock/emo/whatever you want to call it movement at the moment and will complement each other perfectly. Be ready for a chaotic hour or two if you see these two.

When? 15.45 (Smith Street Band) 17.25 (The Menzingers) Where? Lock Up stage

Must listen to tracks: Surrender (Smith Street Band) Good Things (The Menzingers)

Alvvays

The rise of Alvvays has been slow and steady but it’s ever present. They released their self titled debut album in 2014 and have been touring the UK constantly ever since. They have a brilliant collection of songs that’ll go down wonderfully in their afternoon slot at the festival.

When? 19.30 – Friday Where? Festival Republic Stage

Must listen to track: Archie, Marry Me

Bad Breeding

There’s always one band you might not have heard of who have the capacity to absolutely blow you away and Bad Breeding have the potential to be that band for festival attendees this year. They create a wall of noise described by the Guardian as “the best punk band in Britain using guitar/bass/drums/vox”.

When? 13.40 - Saturday Where? Festival Republic Stage

Must listen to track: Burn This Flag
