Monthly Festival Round-Up: February 2012

Temperatures in parts of the UK plunged to -11C over the last month; there’s been snow and reports of the cold snap getting colder. It is in short, still really cold outside. To ease the pain of the chilliness lets forward think to the festival season and have a round-up of all that’s been announced since our December review, and there has been loads announced to get stuck into.
Let’s start with the first festival on our festival calendar, the epic, Camden Crawl. Taking place over the bank holiday weekend of May 4th-6th in a whole host of venues in Camden. The Crawl will kick off with Death In Vegas playing the opening party at Koko. There are some 300 acts and events scheduled so more announcements are eagerly anticipated shortly.
Staying in the capital, the Bloc Festival, which this year has a new home on the Royal Victoria Dock, has announced that Orbital will headline. Other names on the bill include Flying lotus, Gary Numan, Battles and Ricardo Villalobos.
Field Day, taking place earlier this year on June 2nd, already had an amazing line-up announced, including Franz Ferdinand, Metronomy, Gold Panda and Mazzy Star. Yet in the last few weeks the Victoria Park event announced a few more great additions including Korallreven, Friends (main picture) and Blood Orange.
The Apple Cart festival, the sister fest of Field Day and taking place the following day (June 3rd) have announced their first wave of acts. Music acts include Billy Bragg, Stornoway, Noah & The Whale, Jeffery Lewis & The Junkyard and Marcus Foster. There will also be a huge array of comedy, arts and cabaret on display. And magic, more festivals should have magic acts.
Moving down to the South Coast and taking place the week after the Camden Crawl we have The Great Escape. The Great Escape, dubbed the UK’s equivalent of SXSW, is now entering it’s 7th year and this month released it’s first wave of acts. Acts that will appear in venues across the city will include We Are Ocean, Dry The River, Africa Express Sound System, Bos Angeles, The Soft, Alt-J, Django Django, Spector and Friends. The Great Escape will run from the 10th to 12th of May and will include a whole host of emerging acts.
Download, who had already announced The Prodigy, Black Sabbath and Metallica, playing the Black album in full, as headliners, announced further additions. The new acts added to the June event (8th-10th) include Chase and Status, Tenacious D, Steel Panther, Slash and Biffy Clyro. There is also a returning Soundgarden on the bill, there first UK performance since the band reformed in 2009.
Biffy Clyro being announced for Download leads us nicely onto Rockness. The Scottish event, taking place over the same weekend as Download, 8th-10th June in the beautiful Loch Ness have announced their first wave of acts including, Biffy Clyro. Also announced were Ed Sheeran, Justice, Deadmau5, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and Metronomy. Also on the bill are Mumford & Sons who could well debut new material.
From Scotland we move to Wales and our favourite mid-sized festival, the Green Man Festival. January saw Green Man announce its first wave of acts, including Feist. The Canadian, who arguably had one of the best albums of 2011, will headline the Sunday night. 2012 will see Green Man celebrate it’s tenth birthday, originally starting off as a 300 capacity event it now runs for three days in August (17th-19th) in the Glanusk Park.
Other acts confirmed for Green Man this month include The Walkmen, Islet, Slow Club, Ghostpoet, Alt-J and The Felice Brothers.
From Wales we head to The Isle of Wight, a little island hosting two amazing festivals. Much as been written here before about The Isle of Wight Festival and its American trilogy of headliners, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and Pearl Jam, but January saw lots of movement from Bestival. Bestival have announced that this year’s fancy dress theme will be wildlife, so expect some animal antics on site. Bestival have also announced Orbital as one of their headliners. It’s hardly surprising seeing Orbital on the festival rounds this year with new album ‘Wonky’ their first in 7 years, on the verge of release. The duo will also play the Secret Garden Party in July.
Bestival’s sister festival, Camp Bestival, which runs 26th to 29th July will be headlined on the opening night by Hot Chip. Other acts announced this month include Little Dragon, Rizzle kicks, Adam Ant, Spector and Kool and the Gang. King creosote & Jon Hopkins and the legend that is Rolf Harris are also on the bill.
The No Direction Home festival has announced it’s first headliner for its debut year. Richard Hawley will headline the Nottinghamshire event, which runs June 8th-10th. Also confirmed are Django Django, Gruff Rhys, Andrew Bird, The Low Anthem, Slow Club and Lanterns on the Lake, making for a very impressive debut line-up. No Direction Home is the sister festival of End of the Road, who have confirmed Grizzly Bear, The Antlers and Tindersticks on their bill.
Bad news surfaced this month about The Big Chill as organisers announced the event would not take place this year. The Herefordshire event will return in 2013, as will Oxegen, which is also taking this year off. Oxford’s Truck festival will also return this year, under the stewardship of new organisers and the fine folk who organise the Y Not Festival in Derbyshire. No announcements have been made for either of these yet.
We end our round up with casting an eye on festivals happening abroad. Of course the big announcement this month was Coachella, taking place over two weekends, the LA festival will be headlined by The Black Keys, Radiohead and Dr Dre & Snoop Dogg. The returning At The Drive In, Mazzy Star and Refused are all on the bill. Other huge acts include Pulp, Bon Iver, Arctic Monkeys and The Shins.
Refused will also play at the Way Out West festival in Sweden, along with Bon Iver, Feist and War On Drugs. Primavera Sound in Barcelona completed their line-up with Swede punks Refused, Michael Gira, John Talabot, Demdike Stare, Death Grips, Lee Ranaldo and Beirut all added to the bill. The Cure will headline the Barcalona event, and will also play the Bilbao BBK and the Optimus Alive festival in Portugal, also on the bill for both events is Radiohead. The Stone Roses, Snow Patrol, Florence and the Machine and Mazzy Star are all lined up for the Portugal festival. Meanwhile back in Spain, the legendary New Order has been announced for Benicassim. Florence and the Machine and The Vaccines are also on the bill for the July event.
