Ones for the Road - Great Songs to Drive to

With a long trip ahead, some of our best listening gets done while we're driving. And some songs are just made for the road. Here, listed for your listening pleasure, are ten songs we at Shout4Music think are just right for putting your foot down to.

Alabama 3 – 'Woke Up This Morning'
As famously used in 'The Sopranos', it's still difficult to believe Alabama 3 are actually from Brixton, not somewhere in the good ol' U.S. of A. 'Woke Up This Morning' is the kind of song you'd have to listen to if you were cruising around New York with some hoodlum's body in the back. Not that I've ever done that, you understand. Get 'Woke Up This Morning' here. (Stephen Morris)
At The Drive-In – 'Sleepwalk Capsules'
There's a fair amount here, the car is where you get your quality listening done, it's the aural equivalent of the khazi for reading. The LP I probably listen to most in the motor is 'Relationship of Command' by At The Drive-In; the all-out assault of the guitar lines, and Cedric Bixler-Zavala's howling ranting batshit vocals the ideal accompaniment to my driving style……favourite track…..probably 'Sleepwalk Capsules'. Get it here. (Alaster Kirk)
Battles – 'Atlas'
'Atlas' is such a fantastically busy, hectic track, that you have to be doing something while you're listening to it. So you might as well be bombing along down the motorway while the chaos unfolds on your speakers. Get it here. (Stephen Morris)
Brand New - 'Not The Sun'
I'm a really big fan of Brand New, and especially of Jesse Lacey. But for some reason I always find myself listening to them when I'm getting ready, cleaning, in the car etc. 'Not The Sun' is just one of those angry songs that you can't help screaming along to.
It's driving guitars and staggered drums add an extra sense of angst, not to mention the powerful vocals which overall make it a perfect driving song. The repetition of “be my bait” is, without a doubt the most effective part of the song. Listen and you'll see what I mean. Get it here. (Arusa Qureshi)
Cake – 'Stickshifts and Safetybelts'
This isn't a song that's likely to make you hit the gas terribly hard, it's more of a cruising song. Cake dismiss Japanese imports in favour of classic American automobiles that allow for cuddling up on a bench seat during a long drive. Get it here. (Alan Ashton-Smith)
Neil Diamond – 'Sweet Caroline'
Every now and then you need a bit of cheese during your drive – especially if you've got a bunch of mates with you. There's a fair few Queen songs which will happily fit the sing-a-long bill ('Don't Stop me Now', 'We Will Rock You' and, of course, 'Bohemian Rhapsody') and you could also plump for Jeff Beck's 'Hi Ho Silverlining'.
But I've plumped for this Neil Diamond classic. All together now: 'Sweet Caroline…BAH BAH BAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!' Get it here. (Stephen Morris)
Focus – Hocus Pocus
Fans of Steve Coogan may recognise this as being the track used in the opening credits of 'Saxondale'. The closing credits featured another Focus tune, 'House of the King'.
Dutch band Focus produced some fantastic classic rock instrumentals of which this is possibly the finest: a call and response between two musical ideas which compete with each other on a high octane reverie featuring flutes and yodelling. And that's something Fleetwood Mac's 'The Chain' can only dream of. Get it here. (Stephen Morris)
LCD Soundsystem – 'Daft Punk Is Playing At My House'
Upbeat electronic music can always be relied upon for long distance motorway journeys. The Propellorheads could join the list for those very reasons. LCD Soundsystem's output is often thought of as dance music for people who've put the club scene behind them. But as someone who never really embraced the club scene in the first place, I still love this track. Get it here. (Stephen Morris)
Morrissey – 'My Love Life'
I don't want to drive or ever own a car but if I did, the first thing i'd do is immitate this song's video. Get it here. (Christopher Moffatt)
My Computer – 'The Boy I Used To Be'
Songs with a sense of the epic to them can be the perfect accompaniment to a long car journey. 'The Boy I Used To Be' – a middle finger waving assault on those who thought you'd never come to anything - is a kind of electro-indie answer to 'Bohemian Rhapsody', complete with orchestral sounds and lots of swearing.
As the song unfolds, it reveals a fantastic instrumental which could be the sound of some intergalactic space battle – always exciting for the inner 'Battlestar Galactica' fan in me. Get it here.
