The Back Page: a Q+A with Cole Salewicz of The Savage Nomads
Being on the internet, Shout4Music doesn't have a back page. But if it did, it might look a bit like this.
We've asked a bucket full of bands and an array of artists to answer our questions on life, the universe and everything.
Here, Cole Salewicz of London's The Savage Nomads answers our questions with no less than a fair bit of aplomb.
If you've not come across them before, check out the Soundcloud embed below. Catchy guitar riffs and smooth, bang on vocals with just a hint of 80s nostalgia about the whole thing.
For a greater insight into their album, 'Coloured Clutter', take a look at Fraser Balaam's review. But not until you've read this...
What are you listening to right now?
Ok at this precise moment to 'Muziqawi Slit' by Wallias Band who were these groovy cats from Ethiopia making noise in 1977. I feel like '77 was a pretty sick year. In fact I only listen to music that was made in a year with a 7 in it. I mean, in 2007 the Spice Girls embarked on a righteous reunion tour. '97 we had 'Candle in the Wind' and 'OK Computer'. Dope. Decent if not dope. Unfortunately U2's 'Joshua Tree' was released in '87 but Ireland won the Eurovision contest so that kinda balanced out the universe. Which is very important.
How did you get into music?
It was either that or the army. And I guess my parents had a stereo and a couple of records lying around on the veranda, as a young boy I would whittle bits of vinyl together in the hope that one day mp3s would exist. And then I was one of the prime investors in Limewire File Sharing.
Tell us a joke.
Ok. I don't normally do requests but…I'm struggling here, everything I can think of involves bestiality.
Who do you follow religiously on Twitter?
Prince (@Prince_Live). He's tweeted a grand total of one time and used it to commemorate Michael Jackson. We should leave important stuff like that up to him. I like to look at Rio Ferdinand's twitter (@rioferdy5) but you should take that for granted. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that The Savage Nomads are twitter kings (@thesavagenomads), and that none of you small-minded bitches can test us. 4k followers and going strong baby.
What have you been reading lately?
My tweets. As well as '1984' by Orwell but he's such a grumpy fuck! I started reading 'Corner Boy' by Herbert Simmons after reading 'Native Son' by Richard Wright. That's a damn good story of oppression, in all honesty there's some emotive symbolism in there: I was rolling round the bus stop in an uncontrollable heap of tears when our protagonist (the aptly named Bigger Thomas) gets the electric chair at the end. If you read it, I haven't ruined anything. Everything in that book is a system. I also read hipster puppies' tumblr.
Who is the most influential person in your life?
Prince for what he's taught me about twitter.
Which song do you wish you had written?
'Purple Rain'. Obviously. And 'Lam Lam' by Baaba Maal. That. Is. A. JAM!!!! And 'White Man in Hammersmith Palais' by The Clash. But I'd be a little bummed if I wrote 'Yonkers'. Frankly I'd rather listen to 'Dizzee's Bonkers'. FEEEEEEL ME?
Does God exist?
Yes and he's listening to The Savage Nomads on his iPhone 5.
We're at the bar. What are you drinking?
Are you buying? Ok. I want a Manhattan, and kick the vermouth in the side with a pair of steel-toed boots.
Who would you dread getting stuck in a lift with?
I heard Gadaffi smelt quite bad. He'd probably preach to you too. Preachy fucker.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be David Beckham's bootman at his warehouse where he keeps all his surplus boots. Cos then I could sell them on eBay, that's not a bad living I reckon. I also wanted to be able to tame a tiger and still hope to do so one day. And I wanted to be Brian Fantana from 'Anchorman'.
What song will you have played at your funeral?
'Baby Got Back' By Sir Mix-a-lot.
What gigs, songs or albums are you promoting at the moment?
Our kick-ass debut album 'Coloured Clutter' which came out at the end of summer. It's had some nice things said about it. Artrocker magazine proclaimed it as 'the best debut album from a British band this year' which was kinda cool ya know.
We are also promoting our residency at The Notting Hill Arts Club which starts on 7 December 2011 and is always free entry. It's the Death2Disco night. And I just got the call today, TODAY! that we are supporting Mick Jones at The Scala on 8 December 2011 on his sell-out 'Justice Tonight' tour. He's playing Clash songs for the first time since 1982. We are honestly honoured.
I guess we're also promoting OUR NEXT SINGLE which is just about to come out, 'What The Angel Said', I guess we're promoting the video more than anything. Go look for it. It's had nearly 50,000 hits which is cool.
