The Back Page: a Q+A with Laura Gibson
Being on the internet, Shout4Music doesn't have a back page. But if it did, it might look a bit like this.
We've asked a bucket full of bands and an array of artists to answer our questions on life, the universe and everything.
And don't forget to check out Christopher Moffatt's review of Laura Gibson's album 'La Grande' when you're done with this interview.
What are you listening to right now?
Right now I am listening to silence - but not really silence. The crows are cawing outside, the refrigerator is humming, and I can hear the neighbor kids laughing, walking home from school.
The last song I listened to was In this Heart by Sinead O'Connor. The other day a friend of mine had me lie down on the floor to listen to that song, an A Capella hymn from 1994. It's been in my head all week and I went back and listened to it this morning, trying to understand why it's haunting me.
How did you get into music?
Singing hymns around campfires when I was a kid, and later in college when ankle surgery slowed me down enough to learn guitar.
Tell us a joke.
What do Sea Monsters eat?
Fish and ships!
Who do you follow religiously on Twitter?
When I am home -my friends who are out on tour.
When I'm out on tour - my friends who are back at home.
What have you been reading lately?
I just finished 'A Visit From the Goon Squad' by Jennifer Egan, and slowly savoring 'All American Poem' by Matthew Dickman.
Who is the most influential person in your life?
Looking at my life as a whole - my family, as a whole are really influential. My mom and sister.
Which song do you wish you had written?
'Susanne' by Leonard Cohen, basically anything by Leonard Cohen.
Does God exist?
That is my favourite question to talk around but never answer.
We're at the bar. What are you drinking?
It's nice being in this bar with you! I'll have a glass of Spanish red wine.
Who would you dread getting stuck in a lift with?
Someone who suffers from severe panic attacks.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
A nun, a detective, an actress.
What song will you have played at your funeral?
'Dear Someone' by Gillian Welch.
What gigs, songs or albums are you promoting at the moment?
I have a new record called 'La Grande'! I am deliriously excited to share these songs. It's out on 9 January.
How can we find out more about you?
I have a Facebook Page, and a website/blog and twitter:
twitter - @lauragibsonband
Also, it seems I am always talking deep into the night with the people that come to my shows. That is a good way to find out more about me.
