The Back Page: a Q+A with Sam Lockwood from The Jezabels
Being on the internet, Shout4Music doesn't have a back page. But if it did, it might look a bit like this.
We've asked a bucket full of bands and an array of artists to answer our questions on life, the universe and everything.
Today, Sam Lockwood (far left) from Australian band The Jezabels answers our questions. Read more to find out more about his interest in classical music, his fear of the politically conservative and his musings on the existence (or not) of God and his/her similarity to an octopus...
And when you've done with this, check out what Jordan Worland said about the band's single 'Trycolour' in his singles round up a couple of weeks back.
What are you listening to right now?
Mine and Heather's friend playing in an orchestra. It's Mahler's Symphony No. 3.
How did you get into music?
My Mum forced me to play piano from a young age. I'm so thankful now - but then I hated it more than anything. Those damned afternoon lessons!
Tell us a joke.
This is one from my girlfriends' four year old step-sister: 'Why did the penguin cross the road? Because it wanted to go to another place'.
Who do you follow religiously on Twitter?
Patton Oswald (@pattonoswalt) and Boots Riley (@BootsRiley). Both social activists in their own ways.
What have you been reading lately?
I've been reading and re-reading the books by WG Sebald. They've without a doubt changed my life.
Who is the most influential person in your life?
Our manager, in a real way. He actually controls my life.
Which song do you wish you had written?
'The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down' by The Band. I actually wish I was Levon Helm. He is not only the best musician/songwriter, but also the best human that ever was.
Does God exist?
I think so, but in a strange sense that is personal. The world is too strange to be totally understandable. But please don't misunderstand me. My God is not up-on-high. She's down with us, helping us get along. Argh I don't want to sound like a normal religious man. I don't actually try and visualise this entity for myself. It's like an octopus but instead of eight arms, it has infinite manifestations and places of existence. Wow. I'm just going to now say that I don't believe in God. That's easier.
We're at the bar. What are you drinking?
Either Guinness or Jameson's.
Who would you dread getting stuck in a lift with?
A person who is truly conservative. They creep me out.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
A musician, which is great. I wanted to be Bob Dylan's guitarist.
What song will you have played at your funeral?
The Traditional Irish song 'The Parting Glass'.
What gigs, songs or albums are you promoting at the moment?
Our album 'Prisoner', which is out soon. We've got a little bit of time off at the moment but we'll be touring everywhere soon. Just got to our website for details: www.thejezabels.com
How can we find out more about you?
www.thejezabels.com is probably the best. I'd like to think we'd communicate what we're about most directly at our shows or through our recordings though. Do it all!
