The Back Page: a Q+A with Simon Mitchell from Young Guns
Being on the internet, Shout4Music doesn't have a back page. But if it did, it might look a bit like this.
We've asked a bucket full of bands and an array of artists to answer our questions on life, the universe and everything.
This time round we check in with Simon Mitchell who plays bass with Young Guns. Keep reading for advice on avoiding weight gain and twitter following. And the true identity of God is finally revealed…
And when you've done all that, check out Ash Meikle's review of Young Guns' album, 'All Our Kings Are Dead'.
What are you listening to right now?
Gallows - "Death Is Birth"
How did you get into music?
When I was 10, part of my dad's job at the time was to bring foreign exchange students over and have them stay at our house during non-term times, and with that I was introduced to all kinds of new shit that kids at school didn't have. I remember one of the first records that was given to me was Bon Jovi's 'Crossroads'.
This was my first 'rock' album I came across and used to listen to it every day. Up until that point, all I listened to was Michael Jackson, The Prodigy and all sorts of urban dance. It was until I grabbed hold of Green Day's 'Dookie' that I really wanted to be in a band, and from that point I knew I wanted to play bass in a band.
Tell us a joke.
What do Michael Jackson and Santa have in common? They both leave kids bedrooms with empty sacks.
Who do you follow religiously on Twitter?
Probably, the most amusing person to follow on twitter I find is either @Queen_UK or @Shitmydadsays. Both provide me much laughter on a frequent basis, but then again I laugh at everything.
What have you been reading lately?
To be honest, I really don't read enough. I have a really short attention span, so unless it's 'Spot The Dog' I'm not really interested. Honestly though, I did start 'The Dirt' the Motley Crue biography whilst we were recording in Thailand and I got about half way through but haven't touched it since. Maybe I'll revisit that book, definitely amused me.
Who is the most influential person in your life?
I know it sounds clichéd, but my mother has been a huge inspiration to me from growing up until now. She showed me an honest and respectful way of life, and the importance of family and friends. Apart from my mother, I find my closest friends a source of inspiration, learning things from them every day.
Which song do you wish you had written?
Green Day's 'Time Of Your Life'.
Does God exist?
Yeah he does. He play's lead guitar in our band (Fraser 'God' Taylor).
We're at the bar. What are you drinking?
Vodka, Lime and Soda. Beer gives you da belly.
Who would you dread getting stuck in a lift with?
Anyone from 'Made in Chelsea'.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I was really into cars and racing as a kid so it would have been either a Rally Car or a Formula 1 driver.
What song will you have played at your funeral?
Kool & The Gang's 'Celebration'.
What gigs, songs or albums are you promoting at the moment?
Tour wise, we're promoting our B.B.C.T (Bare Bones Club Tour) which is happening next February around the release of our new album 'Bones'.
You can pre-order your tickets and various bundle packages from www.weareyoungguns.com. We're also promoting our first single of that album called 'Learn My Lesson' which is available in iTunes!
How can we find out more about you?
Come to a show. We always love meeting new people and hanging out and having good times.
