On first listen, this second album from 6 Music favourites is intimate, warm and rather promising. As opening title track (version one) suggests this is the sound of a rather complex band who still manage to sound like Noah and the Whale, just with a lot more interesting and playful styles. It is hard to pin down their exact sound and as the music press constantly strive to put bands in boxes and genres, it is all the more refreshing to hear an intense and stylistically diverse group. They do however have a lot of the qualities possessed by many of the bands they've supported. They have the pop prowess of Camera Obscura seen on 'Every Morning', the melancholy of Jeffrey Lewis on 'The Last Happy Writer' and the folk tendency of Midlake on 'Last Drinks at Niagara Bar'. Their cinematic, occasionally sonic sound is bold, accessible and playful all at once. Album highlight and well selected single 'Sleep' is a fine example of the pristine melodies they are capable of. Reflective, interesting and all together strangely heart-warming, this is an album worth investing time in.
