There's a chill wind in the air this week – and we're not just talking about the end of the Indian summer and the nights a-drawing in. This week's top ten of free downloads has a gloomy feel to it; Jodie Marie's having trouble with her love life while Wild Beasts and Lisa Hannigan are wondering where it all went wrong. And while Cave Painting and Jukebox The Ghost are on hand to cheer you up, that may not be enough if you've been freaked out by the weirdness of David Lynch…

10: The Smith Westerns – 'End Of The Night (Peaking Lights Remix)'

An accompaniment redolent of The Cure's 'Love Cats' underscores this remix. It's also got a light dub feel to it recalling mid-era Clash. Add to that some hushed Bobby Gillespie-ish vocals and you've got a song that is both entirely familiar and entirely new. 9: Elephant Stone – 'Love The Sinner, Hate The Sin'

Remember Monaco, authors of 'What Do You Want from Me?', from the late 90s? They were the ones who sounded a bit like Electronic who were, in turn made up of bits of New Order. Well, Elephant Stone sound a bit like them. A song about encouragement set over jangly indie guitars. Not bad at all.  Download here: http://www.elephantstonemusic.com/

8: David Lynch – 'Crazy Clown Time'

If you're familiar with Lynch's films, you'll know Lynch is the master of weirdness and disturbing ideas. And so it is with his music. 'Crazy Clown Time' is the soundtrack to your most bizarre dreams, all trip hoppy beats, creepy, strained vocals and breathy sex noises. Lynch may have spent more time listening to Sonic Youth's 'Contre Le Sexisme' than is healthy. Don't have nightmares.  Download here: https://www.facebook.com/davidlynchofficial

7: Dum Dum Girls – 'Bedroom Eyes'

This chart wouldn't be complete (or so it seems) without a bit of dark surf pop (see Still Corners and Two Wounded Birds for recent examples). This week it's the turn of Dum Dum Girls who mix the above with a Brit-girl-pop sound. Imagine Hank Marvin playing with The Long Blondes. No, really. 6: Jodie Marie – 'On the Road' (pictured)

Heavy trip hop from Jodie Marie here. Marie's voice soars and swoops over an electronic landscape caving in on itself. A hymn of praise and blame in equal parts ('you can make me feel better/but then you always let me down'). And rather glorious too. 5: Jukebox The Ghost – 'Empire'

Catchy indie with glockenspiels and everything. 'Empire' chugs along at a nifty pace with a sing-a-long chorus. It's a song about loving a quiet life – and what happens when someone comes along to turn up the volume. Lively and fun. Download here: http://soundcloud.com/partisanpr/jukebox-the-ghost-empire

4: Cave Painting – 'Leaf'

'You are not alone in all that you're going through' runs a lyric from 'Leaf' over stretched out synth chords and a meandering guitar. Despite its gloomy sounds, it's actually rather uplifting. Download here: http://soundcloud.com/anoraklondon/cave-painting-leaf

3: Little Gang – 'Evert's Song'

There's loads of great music coming out from Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland and Denmark at the moment. To prove it's not just about Sigur Ros and Björk (fantastic though they are), here's a contribution from Little Gang, based in Stockholm. 'Evert's Song' opens with the most minimalist of wooden chimes before unfolding into something gentle and elegant that approaches Lambchop territory. 2: Wild Beasts – 'Thankless Thing'

Following on from their latest album 'Smother' comes this free downloadable single. It's a typical Wild Beasts song where quality comes as standard. Expect glumness to abound in a song about a relationship left to rot. Download here: http://soundcloud.com/dominorecordco/wild-beasts-thankless-thing

1: Lisa Hannigan – 'A Sail'

Lisa Hannigan's new album 'Passengers' has been on permanent rotation in the Shout4Music office lately. And we were lucky to catch up with her recently after her trip to the US. 'A Sail' is a heartbreaking dissection of where it all went wrong in a relationship ('Well I was the loudest/while you stayed quiet'). It's beautiful, poignant and sad. Fans of Ellie Goulding and Kathryn Williams should pay attention. Download here: http://soundcloud.com/partisanpr/lisa-hannigan-a-sail
