It wasn’t a case of Lincoln residents swinging from every available rafter to catch a strained glimpse at one of Britpop’s wave hugging bands entrance to the Engine Shed, more a compact ensemble of true-to-heart music lovers. And for Shed Seven’s first venture into the ‘shire, it was eagerly anticipated, not just because of their extended hiatus.
Early memories of Rick Witter bellowing out pristine indie classics ‘She Left Me On Friday’ and ‘Going For Gold’ was a memory that has always been a prevalent fixture when thinking of bands that have not succumbed, as yet, to my watchful eye. This, however, was to change tonight and like most, wasn’t going to let it pass without exiting the venue with my voice intact.
Without hesitation Witter & co blast through a ‘greatest hits’ set comprising of; ‘Getting Better’, Devil In Your Shoes’, ‘Disco Down’, ‘Speakeasy’ and ‘Bully Boy’. And to our (the crowds) delight, they too, seem to be revelling in their new fangled return to the gazing eye.
The encore comprised of Witter doing his own Jagger take on ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash’ with consummate poise. And for indie folk alike, it really doesn’t get much better than these York four-piece belting out the heart melting ‘Chasing Rainbows’. And may I point out that its hard to recall a more rapturous climax from a crowd at the Engine Shed at a finale sing-a-long than tonight. Shed Seven, don’t leave it too long before you return!
