Having made quite the name for themselves in their native Oxfordshire, Dead Jerichos are a band riding the crest of an impressive wave. Appearances on BBC Introducing and the release of the 'Please Yourself' EP have capped off a promising year for the trio, who label themselves as new wave psychedelia, but often transcend genre classification.

The title single cuts back to the band's formation in an Drayton biker bar – 'Please Yourself' is foundation indie, with frontman Craig Dyson's catchy vocal hooks spat over short, sharp guitar sounds which keep the pace high and the pulse racing. The bass is high in the mix, thrusting the track forward, and 'Please Yourself' draws to a close with a swirling mass of ethereal reverb which sets Dead Jerichos apart from the hundreds of indie-by-numbers bands springing up on a daily basis.

The three-piece are determined not to restrict themselves to a single sound however, and that innovation is shown nowhere better than on 'Mountains,' a four minute blizzard of a track which builds post-rock layers around a punchy indie shell. With the second inclusion on the EP, 'Spaces And Sounds,' taking on a more futuristic, Foals-esque edge, there is plenty of imagination on show. The band clearly take pride in finding the gap between styles, and excel in driving a wedge into it with their catchy, up-tempo rhythms.

For such a new band, Dead Jerichos have already achieved a great deal. The EP, available from their bandcamp page, should open up a world of opportunities for the Oxford trio, and no doubt we'll be hearing a lot more from them in 2012. For now, take a moment to check out this special BBC Introducing version of 'Mountain.' It's definitely worth your time.
