My Gold Mask are a husband and wife duo from Chicago who create what they appropriately describe as "extrinsic pop". Whilst Gretta Rochelle takes on both drumming and vocal duties, husband Jack Armondo provides the cool sounding guitar riffs and occasional back-up vocals. Together they form a tight and effective partnership, producing a sound that is both dynamic and intriguing.
Their 2010 EP 'A Thousand Voices' succeeded in garnering some significant attention in the US, with a number of blogs labelling the duo as ones to watch early on. The EP itself led to many Yeah Yeah Yeahs comparisons, primarily due to the similarities between Rochelle and Karen O. But despite this, there is still something wholly unique and nostalgic about the EP. On 'Violet Eyes', the duo bring forth a certain intensity, held together by repetitive and almost menacing guitar lines and Rochelle's sinister sweetness, as she sings "I like shooting arrows in the dark, I like driving nails into your heart!" 'All Up In The Air' is a dramatic track with epic sounding drums and general fuzziness. 'Fingerprints' and 'Circle Mass' meanwhile both continue the chaotic yet well-organised nature of the EP, bringing a somewhat dark energy into their infectious pop melodies. Overall, 'A Thousand Voices' is a strong EP, highlighting the great chemistry between the duo and their obvious talent.
The duo's fan-base, which includes world renowned designer Phillip Lim, who used their music to soundtrack the unveiling of his new collection during Fashion Week, has been growing steadily since they first burst onto the scene. But as they prepare to take on the UK and Europe, that fan-base will only expand, especially as they tour and introduce their awesome sound to a whole new group of listeners. And there's no doubt that many will be interested in following their journey. Look out for My Gold Mask as they descend upon the UK, but in the meantime enjoy the official video for 'Violet Eyes' plus a live performance of 'All Up In The Air' below.
