Whales in Cubicles are a strange bunch. Taking their name from an Andrew Bird track, you would expect a band tinged with folk influences, but instead the London four-piece are a step in the other direction, their own brand of indie alt-rock earning them a deal with London label Young & Lost Club in time for their debut single.

'We Never Win' is a bold statement from a band determined to gatecrash the current scene. Frontman Stef Bernadi begins the track in downcast fashion, his resigned tone and defeatist lyrics a guilty admission of youthful apathy confessed over sobbing guitar and contemplative drums, giving the atmosphere time to build before bursting through it in anthemic fashion. The volume rises, the cymbals crash and the catchy chorus sticks in your head, regret turned into a frustrated call to arms by Bernardi's desperate cry.

The frustration builds through to a wailing crescendo, the drums punching their way straight through the late 90s with a sound evocative of the garage rock revival that followed. Whales in Cubicles are keen to show off their diversity, however – 'Never And Ever' is more traditional indie fare, whilst 'Terror Of The Void' is a burst of pure energy, the siren of the guitar and thrashing drums providing three minutes of aggression and adrenaline. The evolution from this to the single is clear – there is structure in the chaos, and a message sure to resonate amongst an audience determined to break out of a cycle of indifference.

'We Never Win' is scheduled for a 23rd January release. Fortunately for those lacking the patience, you can check out the single, complete with home-made video, below.
