Brighton school friends The Mojo Fins have recovered from the tragic loss of vocalist Jon Chandler in 2007 to release their first album, ‘The Sound That I Still Hear’. This, the second single taken from that LP, is a delicate offering of harmonious pop-rock. A hefty dose of sentimentality pervades this track. It’s by no means a bad thing, mind, as effective melodies and intricate arrangements also figure in the bargain, producing a piece of music that communicates loss and memory in an intriguing fashion. The mood here is bittersweet: there’s a sense of uplifting harmony coupled with a restrained sadness, which expresses itself fully only in the song’s closing moments, when singer Stephen Brett’s vocals give way to something resembling a modern day Gregorian chant. It’s not an instant smash hit, but an accessible grower; the kind of song you listen to as you stare, melodramatically, out of your bedroom window at a windswept heath below. Or something. By turns challenging, reflective and almost haunting, it’ll appeal to those who put melody first.
