Mumford & Sons and Laura Marling are pleased to announce details of a brand new EP of collaborative recordings with a collective of Indian musicians, the Dharohar Project, in July.

The British artists embarked on a unique tour of India back in December 2009, spending a number of days with Rajasthani folk musicians in a makeshift studio at an arts & culture school in Delhi. The fruits of those recordings will be made available through iTunes on 5th July.

The EP features 4 songs, including collaborative re-workings of Mumford & Sons’ song ‘To Darkness’, and Laura Marling’s ‘Devil’s Spoke’.

EP Tracklisting:

1. Devil’s Spoke / Sneh Ko Marg

2. To Darkness / Kripa

3. Anmol Rishtey

4. Mehendi Rachi

Its release coincides with two prior announced performances by all three artists in London and Bradford. Both dates will feature individual sets alongside collaborations.

The London show is part of the iTunes Festival performances at London’s Roundhouse in July.

Record Label: Xtra Mile Recordings

Our Rating:

Xtra Mile Recordings have decided to blow their own trumpet a bit by putting out this album that displays the various talents of ten of their artists.  It opens with a track by Frank Turner, ‘Sons Of Liberty’ that is one of the better songs on this compilation.  Though his over-earnestness can annoy, there’s a passion and polish in evidence here that displays why Turner has won over so many fans.  The real stand-outs come later though.  Chris T-T’s ‘Elephant In The Room’ is chock-full of great lines, such as, ‘Then I remembered the previous centuries / Before the word freedom replaced just being free.’  This is followed by Beans On Toast’s quirky love song ‘I Fancy Laura Marling’, which manages to be simultaneously charming and incredibly sinister.  As for the rest, there are a couple of slightly forgettable tracks – Straight Lines’ offering is rather bland, for example – but nothing that’s genuinely poor.  Xtra Mile seem pretty chuffed with their signings, and based on this album, they’re quite right to feel that way.

Folk lovely Alessi Laurent-Marke wanders Europe aimlessly playing her ambient folk pop songs where ever she deems fit  to drop her hat. Her loitering enunciations are accompanied by a wisdom beyond her years as a lyricist. She has been rightly compared to the erudite Laura Marling, and it’s plain to see why – already gaining much acclaim for her last album ‘Notes From The Treehouse’. On tour she is accompanied by her band of travelling musicians who gather together whenever they hear the calls for arms and form Alessi’s Ark.

Hello Alessi Ark… How is London treating you at the moment?
Hello there. London is treating us well thank you, albeit rather rainy.

How would you describe your sound to our readers using only four words?

Handmade, underwater, hug. Does handmade count as one word or have I exceeded the limit?

Can you give an insight into the makings of Alessi’s Ark musically please…
It’s a group that comes together whenever it’s able to. The fellows are dotted around the country so I split the time between playing shows solo and with the Ark. It’s always a treat to play with them.

How’s all the touring going for you at the moment? You have quite an extensive list of dates in December and January?
Touring is a lot of fun – there are so many lovely corners of country I hadn’t visited before doing this. I feel fortunate to be able to share the songs and travel around. I especially like seaside towns. For the next tours, it’ll be the first time visiting quite a few places! After ‘Christmas Crackers’, Jake (Bellows) and I are headed to Germany for a tour there, O Emperor, Sons of Noel and Adrian and I will be touring Ireland and the UK in January and then in February,  Rachael Dadd and I will be touring the UK.

What would your perfect day consist of?
A long walk, some music – either listening or playing or both, sometimes to draw, a train ride to somewhere by the sea, an apple crumble and then another long walk. All in good company.

The best discovery musically you’ve found from either an independent store or a car boot/market stall?
When I was writing my zine, these shops and their recommendations really blew
me away ;

- Bright Eyes and Townes Van Zandt from Park Ave. cds in Winter Park, Florida.
- Karen Dalton from Rough Trade, Talbot Road.
- Rodriguez from Other Music, New York.

Favourite London venue?
There are a few ; The Luminaire, Union Chapel, any of the Southbank venues and Bush Hall. I liked the instores at the Rough Trade in Neal’s Yard.

Lykke Li or Laura Marling?

I don’t think I’ve heard Lykke. I’m going with Laura.

Waking up or Bedtime?
It depends on the time of year, at the moment I love bedtime.

The first thing you did when you woke up this morning?

Pulled up the window blinds.

What are your aspirations for 2010?

Hopefully I’ll be able to keep playing and sharing the songs. A new EP ‘Soul Proprietor’ will be out early next year, I’m looking forward to that.

Latitude Festival returns for an incredible 5th Edition on 15-18th July 2010 set in the beautiful countryside of Henham Park Estate on Suffolk’s Sunrise Coast.

A festival like no other, Latitude stands alone as a bold and pioneering event with a line-up like no other. In the stunning Suffolk countryside, Latitude incorporates the very best of music, theatre, comedy, literature, film, poetry, dance, art, fashion and cabaret for a truly unique weekend of fun and adventure as well as inspiration and education. Four arenas are dedicated to an exciting selection of musical talent from emerging bands, international stars and homegrown heroes, whilst the arts onsite command no less than thirteen arenas and areas providing something for everybody – no matter what your tastes or desires; once again making Latitude the place to be this summer.

~ OBELISK ARENA ~

The Obelisk Arena has been the focal point for many of Latitude’s most memorable performances over the years and with headlining performances from Florence + the Machine, Belle and Sebastian and Vampire Weekend this year will be no different. Also playing are Empire Of The Sun, Rodrigo y Gabriela, The Temper Trap, Laura Marling, Hockey and Frank Turner and joining this stunning line-up is:

Texan four-piece The Strange Boys wield a fantastic blend of early days Rolling Stones with a modern twist. Back to basics scuzzy rock ’n’ roll with primal blues rock riffs and soulful swagger, their disharmony is matched with a sensitive and melodic side. Formed in 2004 they have already gained a devoted following, but with their latest album ‘Be Brave’ making waves over here, their set at Latitude’s Obelisk Arena will help spread the word further.

~ THE WORD ARENA ~

Inside the large canopy that comprises The Word Arena lies an amazing set of alternative artists, crossing genre boundaries seamlessly. You’ll discover a host of fresh and exciting acts from across the spectrum. With The National, The xx and Grizzly Bear headlining and The Horrors, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Richard Hawley plus many more already confirmed – this is a line-up that is not to be missed.

Just confirmed are:

Sussex, an unlikely hotbed of pop talent, gave rise to The Feeling – five lads whose Number one album success made them one of our biggest intelligent boy bands for the latter half of the decade. Massive top ten hits ‘Fill My Little World Right Up’, ‘Never Be Lonely’ and ‘I Thought It Was Over’ sealed their position as the streamlined radio constants you couldn’t help but love. With their as-yet unnamed third studio album due for release this summer, The Feeling will be a natural fit on The Word Arena’s exhilarating bill.

Merseyside troupe The Coral return to Henham Park will. Following their captivating acoustic set on Latitude’s second stage two years ago, the five-piece return with a full band performance in The Word Arena. With four Top Five charting albums, a Top Ten ‘Best Of’ collection and timeless top ten singles, ‘Don’t Think You’re The First’, ‘Pass It On’ and ‘In The Morning’, their long-awaited re-emergence will remind everyone of the acidic melancholy they deal in so well. Nostalgia laced melodies and skittering and ramshackle rhythms will spin from their well of songs, bolstered now by the material from their forthcoming fifth album.

As the former leader of the inimitable Throwing Muses, Kristin Hersh has achieved an almost legendary status as a prominent singer songwriter in her own right. Having recorded her eighth studio album of solo material – ‘Crooked’, due out later this year – along with a second album of Appalachian folk songs, Hirsch brings her hazy, resonant folk works to The Word Arena. With an enormous amount of solo and band material to draw from, this is one set guaranteed to hit the mark.

Psychedelic Canadians Black Mountain have risen their heads again and Latitude will feel the full force of their musical assault. Little has been heard since the release of 2008′s incredible ‘In The Future’, the band’s second record of thick, impenetrable riffs and melodic mantras. Whispers tell of the completion of their fabled third album. Throughout their time together, they’ve garnered plaudits – from nominations in Canada’s Polaris and Juno album prizes, to being asked to contribute a track to the Spiderman 3 soundtrack. It’s has been quiet recently, yet The Word Arena will be anything but once they hit the stage with the power and starkness of a military barrage.

Electro-rock duo The Big Pink, comprising of multi-instrumentalist Robbie Furze and Milo Cordell, have already won the prestigious NME Philip Hall Radar Award for ‘Best New Act’ since they were signed in 2009. Their gritty beats, droning guitars, abstract effects and dreamy vocals create a soundscape which is arty yet tuneful, perfectly demonstrated on big hit ‘Dominos’ featured on their debut album ‘A Brief History of Love’ released in September 2009.

Bella Union stalwarts and Danish five-piece The Kissaway Trail have started the year well with a North American tour support slot with The Temper Trap and the release of their triumphant second album ‘Sleep Mountain’. Soaring vocal harmonies and amassed orchestration not only fit The Word Arena’s epic line-up, but also give bands like Arcade Fire a run for their money.

laura2An angelic, ashen faced young finger picking simplistic folk-minstrel, the young Laura Marling is fresh back from SXSW after impressing with her careless-folk swagger. She comes across care-free sometimes ignorant but it is prevalent that she has set her course. There is no hidden happiness, she has a murky storytelling ethos alike Morrissey in the female form. With her slap in the face honesty-remorse no more- too much has affected her emotions.

A formidable new talent there is no doubt, the little lady with a big sound. There is an urge of devilment within her frantic lyrics, maybe a tortured fragile soul. Tortured but compelling this literature student’s gloomy but judicious writings are before her years. Although they are brash in their exterior there is also naivety within the astute lyrical content.

A roaming soul rebelling against institutionalism, she wouldn’t have been out of place in the 60′s. She is a figure head for the new alternative-folk scene movement that seems to be gathering steam. She began playing the guitar at the age of 3, brought up on Bob Dylan and Ryan Adams. She says she writes when in extreme moods that reflex deep thought provocation. This deep thought has loed to her debut record ‘Alas I Cannot Swim’ out this year.

‘Alas I Cannot Swim’ is an acoustic country head-nodding beautifying the air with its Celtic pace. ‘My Manic And I’ has Marling singing ‘I’m Sorry young man I cannot be your friend/I don’t believe in a fairy tale end’ A young Morrissey prodigy in the making. ‘Ghosts’ again is a bio of her distrust in ‘everlasting love’. ‘Tap At My Window’ inspired by the poetic genius of Phillip Larkin. These fortify what burning talent that Marling really has at her disposal at such a tender age.
