Perfectly pleasant and entirely uninspiring, Morcheeba have stuck to what they know best with their latest offering, ‘Even Though’. No doubt Alan Partridge’s favourite boundary-pushing dance act, they’re clearly looking to inject a bit of credibility into their flagging, “Debenhams Sale Now On” appeal with some hopeful remixes. And who better to energise a song with vitality and imagination than a collection of Belgians! Duos: Mustang And Surfing Leons admirably lift the original to dizzying levels of mild and limp…a bit like having a korma at a Rotary Club disco. Actually, they’re probably really good tunes for having on in the car if you’re driving to a National Trust property that you’re particularly excited about. Vapid dirge – must try harder.

Our Rating:

After hitting the UK charts, most famously 12 years ago with their single ‘Part Of The Process’, Morcheeba seem like the kind of band who have discovered a music plan of action they like and have unswervingly pursued it ever since. On ‘Blood Like Lemonade’, their seventh album, this trend has two major consequences. One, that the album feels a little dated, with its reliance on dreamy, trip hop-influenced groove-pop interspersed with sampling and scratching courtesy of the album’s smattering of instrumental tracks. It’s not quite staid, but there’s nothing too adventurous here. But, consequence two, it means that Morcheeba have the polished sound of a band occupying a comfortable space on the pop sofa, a space that’s as snug as a glove. Check out ‘I Am The Spring’ and ‘Crimson’ for confident, enchanting vocal lines, or ‘Self Made Man’ for a catchy tune to get into your head and not let go. There’s little variety and few surprises on offer here, but what the album delivers in droves are solid, memorable melodies, perfect to peace out to and enjoy alongside a summer’s afternoon daydreaming.

Genre: Chill out
Record Label: Pias
Download Single: Even Though
Our Rating:

Huh? What? Sorry – I just woke up. Boy, they’re still going. Still going. Like those Beckett novels where the narrator falls apart and we follow the dissolution of the “I”, Morcheeba manage to dull the senses in a kind of death-march into a comatose fantasy-land where people dream about their record releases. Except this song isn’t nearly as exciting as even that may sound. Dulcimer laden sub-trip-hop rhythm patterns, sparse acoustic picking, floaty breathy vocals (literally at points) delivered by singer Skye for the first time since 2002 – you know, in case you were worried – this may as well be Cage’s 4”33 of silence. Skye sings of ‘hidden danger’ – but there’s none here, none at all. No intensity, no tension, nothing. (Apart from possibly that heavy breathing that bookends the track implying some kind of stalker situation.) They’ve sold millions so I suppose someone must like this shit. Mondeo Man, Q magazine readers, those boring dicks in bedsits across Brixton who’ll probably enjoy getting stoned to it. But why bother when the likes of the XX have leaped light years ahead in the kind of night-time wonder Morcheeba appear to be feigning.

Multi-million-selling darlings of down-tempo, Morcheeba, will release their seventh and latest album ‘Blood Like Lemonade’ on June 7th through PIAS records.   The album will be preceded by the download single Even Though on May 24th.

Blood Like Lemonade sees Paul & Ross Godfrey united with Skye on vocals for the first time since 2002, restoring the original inimitable laidback charm that made Morcheeba the mainstay of many a chill-out session.

‘Blood Like Lemonade’ is the album Morcheeba have been searching for all these years, one which takes the essence of earlier classics like ‘Who Can You Trust?’ and ‘Big Calm’, and transports it to exotic new places. At its heart are the band’s trademark oozing downtempo trip-hop grooves, embellished with intriguing, idiosyncratic flourishes like the African thumb-piano of Even Though, a song about an abandoned astronaut.

Paul Godfrey explains the lyrics: ‘The lines about “the hidden dangers” and being “cast adrift in space” reflect worries about humanity. That was inspired by reading interviews with astronauts – they’d get into space and look back at the world, and couldn’t understand why people were still fighting with each other, and why we were destroying our own planet, that was so beautiful from a distance. The heavy breathing sound is an astronaut breathing in his helmet. He doesn’t have long to live, and at the end his breathing stops. He’s basically just trying to send a message that we should all get along.’
