Ali Love’s full-length debut is professional, polished and dull as fuck. Bland dance pop with the requisite dash of retro synth, ‘Love Harder’ is not so much bad as pure filler. The album is full of the kind of songs you tolerate in the hope that the DJ will put something more exciting on next. Rising to brief prominence after guesting on the Chemical Brother’s ‘Do It Again’, Ali Love was promptly dropped by Columbia and the evidence suggests that the big boys knew what they were doing. That’s not to say there aren’t the makings of some good songs – ‘Smoke & Mirrors’ is a fairly catchy pop song; ‘Moscow Girl’ wears its ‘80s revival heart on its sleeve; ‘Done The Dirty’ benefits from vocals by New Young Pony Club’s Lou Hayter, and so on. But there’s nothing here that you can’t easily get elsewhere, and better. Part of the problem is that Ali Love desperately wants to be Prince, but my overarching beef with ‘Love Harder’ is that it’s fundamentally an empty experience. This is assembly line dance pop at its most automated. There’s not even much satisfaction in being mean to ‘Love Harder’ – it’d be like curb stomping an egg timer or telling a toaster to go fuck itself.

It kicks off with a beat that belongs in one of Rocky’s infamous pumping-iron montages and, upon the arrival of the first lyric, nostalgic memories of 1980′s Prince and Jermaine Stewart are conjured up inside your head. It’s a slick, smooth psychedelic third track from Ali Love following his two self-released singles in 2006 and his vocals on The Chemical Brothers’ ‘Do It Again’. Setting a fine precedent for what will follow with Love’s debut album, ‘Love Harder’, which is out in August, ‘Smoke & Mirrors’ is packed to the rafters with vintage keyboard and a retro vibe.  The combination of old-school drums with wicked electro worthy of a Space Invaders soundtrack creates an infectious kind of music that you could make war and love to. Ali Love feverishly merges the old with the new and, with ‘Smoke & Mirrors’, he is hoping to finally make his mark with some long awaited chart success. Sure to rip up dance-floors across the country, ‘Smoke & Mirrors’ is no sleight of hand, trick of the mind optical-illusion, it’s good honest music with a nu-disco slant.

Electro punksters Angry Vs The Bear were collectively combing their hair pieces and readjusting their refulgent kaleidoscopic attire in front of a mirror when they came to the attention of Shout4Music. But it’s not just their outlandish hair bravado that’s causing a stir, their music has rightfully been endorsing this quartet and has propelled them to a wide range of music disciples. So before they embarked upon another SXSW voyage in March we caught up with them for a rather funny sequence of questions.

Hello Angry Vs The Bear. What the hell are you up to today?
MF: Well we’re on a tour of the UK promoting our latest single ‘Show Emotion’ and at the moment we’re in the van travelling to our next show which is in Scunthorpe.

For our readers that aren’t familiar with the band, describe your sound in four words…
DB: Filthy, frantic electro pop.

Right…there’s some serious haircuts in the band, who’s is the angriest?
MF: Currently… Pat, as he had to use the wheel arch as a pillow last night in the van – seriously denting his mohawk section. Ross is also slightly perturbed at being confused for a girl and being asked for ID at each venue due to being confused for a 12 year old.

Now that we’ve got that burning question is out of the way, you played SXSW last year to great acclaim. How have you prepared for it this year?
PM: We’re pumped for SXSW this year! Last year was an awesome experience and we can’t wait to get back to 95f heat and do it all again. American crowds are seriously vocal and really get what we’re about so we’re looking forward to expanding on this again this year.

What did you enjoy most about last year’s festival?
DB: It had to be the genuine shock at how passionate the American crowds were for our music and for music in general. They are so hardcore and some travelled for hundreds of miles across America to see us. Our showcase was a particular highlight as there were huge windows backed onto the main street (6th Street) and crowds filled the street outside as well as in the venue to take part in the action! And Ross crowdsurfed out the window and got carried down the road ha ha!

Who are you hoping to catch this year?
RF: City Riots and Cassette Kids as we played with them in London. They were great and a nice bunch. And anyone else interesting we come across who’s up for doing something a bit different.

Your current tour comprises of a lot of +14 shows, is this a market you feel you appeal to or did you want to offer a varied chance of showcasing your sound?
MF: Our fanbase is really mixed but there seems to be a massive lack of 14+ shows in the UK which is a shame as they are the crowd who passionately promote bands and buy music – and essentially keep the music industry and scene alive! So we do love doing 14+ shows as they’re more likely to go mental and have a good time. We like our shows to be open to everyone.

If our readers want to catch Angry Vs The Bear at a festival this summer, where should they be pitching their tents this summer?
PM: We’re still confirming our summer schedule at the moment so all new shows and festival slots can be found at; www.myspace.com/angryvsthebear <http://www.myspace.com/angryvsthebear>

Random question time…You would you prefer to give you a massage Prince or Pat Sharp?
RF: We held a secret ballot and Pat Sharp came out 3:1. So who the hell is the secret Prince lover?? Internal questions will be asked and a full investigation carried out…

And finally, what are Angry Vs The Bear’s aspirations for 2010?
DB: To increase our growing UK fanbase, continue surprising people and keep releasing singles aiming towards an album before the year is out.

Angry Vs the Bear are Mitzi Fox, Darren Barker, Patrick Monahan & Ross Farley! Check out their the video for their latest single ‘Show Emotion’ below;

rbR & B has been seducing boys and girls with its flirtatious grooves for an absolute age now. And this masterful new compilation, served to us lovingly by Rhino UK, works at confirming that statement. This is a stone dead three CD compilation beaming out a multitude of fine artists from the last thirty years.  Prince, Sister Sledge and Christina Aguilera just a few of the major league luminaries rubbing shoulders on this outstanding collection. The extensive sixty song set features solid favourites from the disco era like McFadden & Whitehead’s ‘Ain’t No Stopping Us Now’ and goes right up to the present day electro trend with ‘American Boy’ by Estelle, for instance.  Most of the songs here will be recognised by the average man in the street. Which is another reason this mix up must be celebrated. Rhino have successfully combined quality with commercial success; not always an easy thing to pull off. In short, R & B Anthems is a fine listen and is sure to put a sparkle into these long winter nights.
