DPA Microphones Introduces Its 2061 Miniature Omnidirectional Mic at IBC 2024

DPA Microphones recently unveiled its latest innovation—the 2061 Miniature Omnidirectional Microphone—during the IBC 2024 event held in September in Amsterdam. This mic is designed to elevate audio quality across various applications, including broadcast studios, ENG setups, theaters, event venues, and even houses of worship.

According to Helga Volha Somava, DPA’s product management director, the goal behind the 2061’s creation was to offer audio professionals a no-fuss, crystal-clear microphone. “We designed the 2061 for those looking to take their audio to the next level. It’s a microphone built to deliver unmatched clarity while being rugged and durable enough for any professional setting,” she shared.

The 2061 is set to go head-to-head with some of the more established models in the market.

The standout feature of the 2061 is its simplified 5mm capsule construction, which allows for an impressive frequency response range of 50 Hz to 16 kHz. With a peak sound pressure level (SPL) of 128 dB, the mic guarantees pristine audio quality even in high-volume environments.

DPA has consistently been known for its clear, natural sound, and the 2061 stays true to this legacy, offering exceptional speech intelligibility, which is especially vital in professional broadcast or theatrical settings.

What’s especially cool about the 2061 is its omnidirectional polar pattern, which means it captures sound from all directions without any added coloration. This makes it a great choice for capturing natural voice tones with minimal distortion, regardless of mic placement. Its frequency curve is also engineered for balance, featuring a gentle 3 dB boost between 8 kHz and 16 kHz for that extra bit of presence in the upper frequencies—ideal for clarity in vocals.

Another noteworthy aspect is the mic’s robust build. The 2061 comes equipped with a 4.5-foot Kevlar-reinforced cable, which adds an extra layer of protection against physical wear and tear—perfect for ENG setups or fast-paced environments where durability is a must.

Its advanced sweat-resistant design and IP57 certification make it resilient against water, dust, and makeup. This means the mic is not only tough but also easy to clean, ensuring a longer lifespan, even in challenging conditions and live applications.

For those unfamiliar with IP57 certification, it essentially means the mic can handle dust without any performance issues and can even withstand temporary immersion in water without permanent damage. In other words, this mic is more than ready for whatever you throw at it, whether it’s a high-energy event or a rugged outdoor shoot.

DPA has also made sure the 2061 is easy to work with in hectic environments. The mic comes with fixed connectors compatible with 3-pin LEMO, TA4F, and Mini-Jack, which simplifies setup and allows for quick adjustments on the go—something sound engineers will appreciate when under pressure.

Additionally, the 2061 is compatible with DPA’s recently launched AIR1 Universal Miniature Fur Windscreen, which helps mitigate wind noise during outdoor shoots. Other compatible accessories include the SCM0030 and SCM0034 clips, as well as the DUA056 series of foam windscreens, offering versatility and adaptability in various settings.

What does all of this mean? Well, it means that DPA has created a miniature mic that is so small and durable yet powerful enough to perform in large outdoor venues and even withstand challenging conditions. This pushes what microphones can do and gives us a glimpse of what they still may be in the future.
